About ASEAN NCAP

The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) is an independent vehicle safety initiative dedicated to enhancing road safety across Southeast Asia. The program was established in 2011 through a collaboration between the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Global NCAP. Under this program ASEAN NCAP evaluates the safety performance of vehicles that are available in the ASEAN market through rigorous crash tests and assessment on the advanced safety assist technologies that are equipped in the vehicles.

Since its inception, ASEAN NCAP has delivered independent safety evaluations for a vast range of vehicle makes and models. These ratings serve as a vital benchmark for comparing safety across similar vehicle classes, empowering both individual consumers and fleet operators to make informed decisions when purchasing a vehicle. Based on its assessment, ASEAN NCAP produces safety ratings from Zero to 5-Star rating with 5-Star being the highest. In addition to performing evaluations on the safety performance of new vehicles entering the Southeast Asian market, ASEAN NCAP also goes beyond testing in which we actively advocate for enhanced vehicle safety designs and the inclusion of life-saving technologies.

The current ASEAN NCAP assessment protocol encompasses four assessment domains comprising the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category, the Child Occupant Protection (COP) category, the Safety Assist (SA) category and the Motorcyclist Safety (MS) category.

Regional Safety Research

ASEAN NCAP has developed a series of projects to establish scientific evidence regarding regional road safety characteristics across ASEAN countries.

Regional Focus & Brand Usage Protocol

To ensure the assessment that we conduct reflects the common crash scenarios and road user behaviour across the ASEAN countries, ASEAN NCAP has developed a series of projects that aim to establish scientific evidence regarding regional road safety characteristics across ASEAN. The projects play a crucial role in guiding effective solutions to local safety challenges. Based on the insights and data collected from the research projects, ASEAN NCAP has developed our assessment protocols that catered to the requirements and complexities of road situations in the ASEAN countries.

Similar to other NCAPs around the world, ASEAN NCAP is a consumer programme promoting safer vehicle choices to consumers with MIROS as the programme's secretariat. The other NCAPs have their own safety ratings dedicated for their respective countries or regions. The assessment and test calculations ASEAN NCAP performed are catered for the vehicle specifications that are available for the Southeast Asian market.

Given the high volume of vehicles produced with similar brand names and models available all over the world, vehicle consumers are encouraged to use the specifications to compare the difference between those sold in other countries and the ones sold in the ASEAN market. To ensure that consumers receive accurate and relevant safety information, a Brand Usage Protocol has been established among the NCAP programmes. Under this agreement, only the logo of the respective local NCAP may be used when promoting NCAP results. Accordingly, safety ratings issued by other test programmes must not be applied to vehicle models marketed or sold in Southeast Asian countries.

Purpose & Regional Relevance

ASEAN NCAP supports safer vehicle choices by making vehicle safety information more visible, comparable and consumer-facing.

01

Elevate Vehicle Safety

ASEAN NCAP is targeted to elevate vehicle safety standards for vehicles in the Southeast Asian market.

02

Raise Consumer Awareness

The programme helps consumers understand vehicle safety performance and make more informed decisions.

03

Encourage Safer Vehicles

By publishing vehicle safety information, ASEAN NCAP encourages a stronger market demand for safer vehicles in the region.

Why ASEAN NCAP Matters

Countries in Southeast Asia are growing at variable rates, and mobility patterns are changing progressively. As people move more frequently and vehicle usage increases, the need for safer vehicles rises together with the increased risk.

ASEAN NCAP addresses this need by positioning vehicle safety as a visible, comparable and consumer-facing benchmark for the region.

  • Focus area: vehicle safety and road safety awareness.
  • Region served: Southeast Asian countries and vehicle consumers.
  • Public function: make safety information easier to understand and compare.
