This is in conjunction with the Stop the Crash ASEAN 2016 event that was launched by the Minister of Transport Malaysia, YB Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai. The launch also witnessed the announcement of the Malaysian government to legislate the introduction of Electronic Stability Control (ESC) on all new vehicles by June 2018. During the event, four vehicle manufacturers; Ford, Mazda, Subaru and Volvo, pledged to equip all of its model variants with ESC by January 2017.

During the ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Award 2016 dinner held at the Sepang F1 Circuit itself, ASEAN NCAP also released nine crash test results. The results comprising models from Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Daihatsu and Proton.

ASEAN NCAP Chairman, Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon said:

“Stop the Crash ASEAN is a testament that Malaysian Government is in support to meet the United Nation’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development. We are pleased that the Malaysian government has taken this step to mandate ESC as it will save thousands of lives in Malaysia. On behalf of MIROS and ASEAN NCAP, I urge other countries in our region to follow suit and mandate this life saving technology. In addition, the crash test results that we are releasing today are also proven that most vehicle manufacturers, not only in Malaysia but also in other ASEAN countries, are moving towards developing new vehicles with variants that are fitted with such technology. Therefore, we encourage the car manufacturers to make it standard across all of its variants soon because this will greatly benefit the consumers and ultimately, the nation.”

ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General, Mr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim said:

“This year ASEAN NCAP performed several tests on vehicles that were assessed three years ago. As you can see from the results, some of these vehicles have made tremendous improvements compared to the ones tested before this. Higher variants with better safety fitment are also available for the consumers to choose and most of the results obtained were in the range of 4-Star and above. It is satisfying to know that there is now a growth of safety culture in the ASEAN market with car manufacturers taking the initiative to offer safety fitment in their new models.”

Toyota Calya and Toyota Sienta

Toyota Calya is one of the popular MPV models in Indonesia. In the ASEAN NCAP test, the Calya was equipped with dual airbag, Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) for driver only and ESC is absent. The model upon tested received 4-Star rating for both Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP) with 12.93 points for the former and 73% compliance for the latter.

ASEAN NCAP also tested Toyota Sienta, another MPV that is quite popular in Indonesia. Other than Indonesia, the model is also sold in other ASEAN countries such as Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The MPV fared better with 15.26 points for the AOP category which places it in 5-Star range. Nevertheless, due to ASEAN NCAP 5-Star prerequisite only variants that are equipped with ESC and SBR for both frontal occupants are awarded with 5-Star. Variants that are without are rated as 4-Star. In the COP category, Sienta achieved 74% compliance, a rating of 4-Star.

Honda Civic (2016) and Honda Brio Amaze

Honda tested two of its model in this last quarter of 2016. The Honda Civic was first tested by ASEAN NCAP in Phase II assessment in 2013. The current Civic achieved slightly higher points compared to the one it tested in Phase II; 14.74 points in 2016 and 14.63 points in 2013. With this point the Civic earned a 5-Star rating for its AOP. Nevertheless, for the same category, the Civic was also awarded with 4-Star for variants that are not fitted with ESC and SBR for frontal occupants due to ASEAN NCAP 5-Star prerequisite. The sedan also achieved a good rating for the COP category in which it met 86% compliance, a percentage that places it in the 4-Star range.

The second Honda model tested by ASEAN NCAP was the MPV Honda Brio Amaze. The Brio Amaze received 12.88 points, which makes it earned 4-Star rating for the AOP category. In the COP, it managed to achieve a rating of 2-Star at 45% compliance as seatbelt is the method for its child restraint system.

Nissan Navara (High Variant) and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (2016)

Nissan Navara underwent its second safety assessment with ASEAN NCAP but this time with its higher variant. In the current test the high variant pickup truck performed tremendously well by obtaining 14.44 points, a rating of 5-Star for the AOP category compared to 12.34 points (4-Star) last May. The truck’s COP result also improved with 3-Star rating at a score of 61% compliance versus 37% in the earlier test with 2-Star rating. The standard fitment of ISOFIX and top tether mainly contributes to the increment in points for its COP.

In this quarter ASEAN NCAP also assessed Mitsubishi Pajero Sport for the second time. The first was performed during Phase II in 2013 of which it obtained 4-Star (12.08) for AOP and 40% compliance (2-Star) for COP. In the current assessment the Pajero Sport made a remarkable achievement with 15.29 points for the AOP. As the SUV’s base variants are without ESC, only those that are equipped with such system are awarded with 5-Star AOP and those without were given 4-Star rating. Similar improvement is also evident at its COP category, with 76% compliance the model received a rating of 4-Star.

Daihatsu Sigra, Hyundai Elantra and Proton Ertiga

Daihatsu Sigra is dubbed as Toyota Calya’s twin in which it was developed with the same platform as the latter. For the AOP category, ASEAN NCAP awarded the Sigra with two ratings; variants with no airbag received 1-Star rating at 6.62 points, while variants with double airbag (which has equivalent crashworthiness structure as the Calya’s) were awarded with 4-Star AOP at 12.93 points. Nevertheless, the Sigra’s COP result could not achieve similar percentage as its twin. With seatbelt as the MPV’s child restraint system, it was able to obtain 2-Star rating by meeting 46% compliance.

Hyundai Elantra was tested at its home country in South Korea. The sedan performed well by achieving 14.73 points, the result that gave it 5-Star rating in the AOP. Nevertheless, the Elantra also received 4-Star as the model consists of variants that are equipped with SBR for driver only with no ESC available. As for its COP category, the Elantra scored 77% compliance that made it awarded with 4-Star.

With the recent collaborative venture between Proton and Suzuki, Proton has rebranded the Suzuki Ertiga model with its own brand name. As such, ASEAN NCAP extended the Suzuki Ertiga’s result which was tested in April this year to the newly branded Proton Ertiga. This MPV received 4-Star in the AOP category with 12.39 points. Similar to the Sigra, Ertiga’s tested variant was not equipped with any ISOFIX and top tether hence, it was able to score 33% compliance of which it places the MPV in the 2-Star range.

The gist of ASEAN NCAP Q4 2016 results are as follows.

>Toyota Calya earned a 4-Star rating for both AOP and COP categories when it scored 12.93 points for the former and 73% compliance for the latter category.

>Toyota Sienta scored 15.26 points for AOP.
