It was held at Autoliv Hirotako Safety Sdn. Bhd. in Seri Kembangan. The event was held with the objective of promoting child safety when riding inside a vehicle, use of child restraint system (CRS) for children by care givers, and proper installation of child seat inside a vehicle.

ASEAN NCAP Child Safety Day was officiated by YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Seri Lee Lam Thye, Chairman of Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS). It was attended by over 100 guests comprising road safety agencies, original equipment manufacturers, Children’s Division from Department of Social Welfare, consumers’ organizations, and child seat producers and distributors.

During the Child Safety Day event, ASEAN NCAP Child Safety Specialist, Mr. Yahaya Ahmad presented the Concept of Child Safety in Car. As a support to ASEAN NCAP, a specialist from Japan NCAP, Mr. Yoshihiro Sukegawa also shared their experience in handling CRS with the guests. As educating the public is the main purpose for this event, ASEAN NCAP organized a demonstration on CRS installation with cooperation from child seats’ producers. In addition, ASEAN NCAP is performing a demonstration of CRS performance test or UN R44, which is Frontal Impact Sled Test using Forward Facing Child with a dummy representing a 3-year-old child. The main objective of the demo is to share with the public MIROS and NCAP’s capability to conduct verification of child seat performance test. In conjunction with the ‘Stop the Crash’ campaign with Global NCAP, a presentation on Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) was also presented with the cooperation from Subaru.

Overall ASEAN NCAP is aiming to become a reference point for the public to refer to concerning child safety and child restraint system in vehicles in order to promote the use of CRS for safer mobility of children. We encourage the public to forward their questions to ASEAN NCAP if they would like to seek advice on CRS selection and installation.

ASEAN NCAP Released Crash Test Result on Ford Ranger

ASEAN NCAP also takes the opportunity to announce the crash test result of Ford Ranger, recently crash tested at Crashlab in Sydney, Australia. The Ranger’s test is the first official crash test performed by ASEAN NCAP at Crashlab. It is the fourth crash lab after MIROS PC3, JARI and KATRI.

The tested Ford Ranger scored a reasonably high point of 15.45 for its Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), which is in the 5-Star category. However, due to ASEAN NCAP pre-requisite, the variants without Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Seatbelt Reminder (SBR) for front passengers are relegated to 4-Star AOP. As for the Child Occupant Protection (COP), it obtained 63% compliance; within 3-Star category rating.

ASEAN NCAP Chairman, Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon commented that safety assist technologies are an important component to enhance the safety features of a vehicle. “It is evident from the Ranger’s result pickup trucks do provide a very good survival space for its frontal occupants. We hope pickup trucks will incorporate safety assist technologies into their base variant in the future, which not only protects the occupants in the event of a crash but ultimately prevents a crash from occurring,” he added.

ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General, Mr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim said, “We tested Ford Ranger as part of the pickup truck series that we would like to rate. Chevrolet Colorado subsequently followed at 14.19 (5-Star), Toyota Hilux with 14.53 points (5-Star), then base/standard variant of Mitsubishi Triton at 13.56 (4-Star) and finally Isuzu D-Max with 11.87 (4-Star).

>> Despite the lowest AOP score, D-Max had the highest COP score of 71% (4-Star) together with Hilux.
