ASEAN NCAP Announced Honda Civic’s Result at the Launch of the Global Plan for the 2nd DOA for Road Safety 2021–2030

Kajang, Malaysia, 28 October 2021 – The current COVID-19 pandemic situation has pushed us to be more innovative in our work. The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries or ASEAN NCAP is no exception in which we had to fully utilize whatever communication applications currently available. Due to travelling restrictions, ASEAN NCAP has recently performed an assessment on the new Honda Civic via video conference call. The Civic is the first Honda model to be assessed under the new ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 protocol.

Under the new assessment, the Honda Civic had made an impressive performance with 5-Star ASEAN NCAP rating under its belt with an overall score of 83.47 points. For each category of assessment, the Civic obtained 36.59 points over 40.00 for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), 18.32 points over 20.00 for the Child Occupant Protection (COP) category, 18.16 points over 20.00 for Safety Assist Technologies (SAT) and 10.39 points for Motorcyclist Safety (MS) category.

The new Civic is equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) City, AEB Inter-Urban, AEB Pedestrian, AEB Bicycle, AEB Motorcycle, Auto High Beam (AHB), Child Presence Detection (CPD) and Pedestrian Protection technology as standard fitment across all its variants. The model offers standard six airbags whilst variants with four airbags are offered in certain markets. It has Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) for frontal and rear occupants, and Blind Spot Visualization (BSV) on the passenger side as standard fitment for markets in Singapore and Indonesia. Other advanced safety assist technologies namely, Forward Collision Warning, (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Driver Attention Monitor (DAM) are available in the new sedan either as standard equipment in all variants. Specifically, for the ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 assessment protocol, Honda has stepped up by equipping the Civic with a new AEB technology for Motorcycle as standard fitment in all its variants. This new technology is able to detect the presence of motorcycle that is located in front of the car and perform automatic emergency braking in the event the driver is unaware of the motorcyclist.

MIROS Director-General who is also ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General and Acting Chairman, Hon. Assistant Commissioner (CD) Adjunct Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim said:

“Despite the pandemic situation, I saw car manufacturers have strived to ensure the new vehicles that they are producing meet the needed safety requirements under the new ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 protocol. I am pleased that another of Honda’s model has achieved another 5-Star rating, despite the stringent requirement the new protocol has set. Other than the currently matured technologies fitted in the new sedan, the new Civic has advanced further by developing and equipping a new Autonomous Emergency Braking for Motorcycle. The technology is able to detect the presence of motorcycle in order for the car to avoid collision with the preceding vehicle. Furthermore, Honda is fitting the said technology as standard across all its variants. This is a significant milestone for vehicle safety as we are targeting to reduce the number of fatalities involving motorcyclists. As such, we are proud that vehicle manufacturers are devoting their energy in the next level of vehicle safety. With the launch of the Global Plan for the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, we hope this will be a catalyst for more vehicle manufacturers to follow this foot step to ensure we meet the desired target.”

ASEAN NCAP has just begun its new 2021-2025 assessment protocol in which it covers four assessment domains that are AOP comprising 40 points of the overall score, and COP, SAT and MS that make up 20 points each of the overall score.
