The 4th ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards 2020 Held During the Pandemic & Update of ASEAN NCAP Plans in 2021


Kajang, Malaysia, 25 February 2020 – The New Car Assessment Programme for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) organized its 4th ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards 2020 event on 16 February 2021. The fourth biannual event was held online using the Webex platform as the current COVID-19 pandemic situation does not permit cross-border travels and face-to-face social activities in a physical setting. For the 2020 Grand Prix Awards ceremony, ASEAN NCAP awarded a total of 16 winners or recipients in which comprised two main awards namely the Excellent Award and Best Safety Performance Award. Under the Excellent Award, 12 awards were given out with three of them to individuals and one to an organization who have made outstanding contributions in the vehicle safety field in the ASEAN region. The Best Safety Performance Awards, which were the highlight of the event, was awarded based on their highest scoring points during the ASEAN NCAP 2019-2020 assessments. The Best Safety Performance Awards were for the categories of Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), Safety Assist (SA) and the Overall for the highest achiever. The winners for the Best Safety Performance AOP, COP and Overall is awarded to the model Honda Accord whilst the winner for the category SA was awarded to Toyota Majesty/Granvia.

In his welcoming remark, Prof. (Adjunct) Ir. Ts. Dr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim, who is the Secretary General of ASEAN NCAP and Director General of MIROS, presented some of ASEAN NCAP and Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) plans for 2021 and also included a comparison of road fatalities statistics for 2019 and 2020. Some of the key points that he highlighted was on possible collaboration with MIROS such as involvement in the research clusters that MIROS has developed, further development of MIROS PC3 in Melaka, development of the new test track, an upcoming event of the 6th UN Road Safety Week in May 2021 and celebration of ASEAN NCAP 10-year anniversary in December.

Due to the movement control order that was enforced in Malaysia at the time in order to break the chain of COVID-19, the award ceremony was held in a simple and humble atmosphere at MIROS office. Upon announcement of the award recipients, the ASEAN NCAP secretariat had showcased speech appreciation videos of the award winners/recipients to the audiences.
