Bangkok, Thailand, 28 May 2024 – The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries or ASEAN NCAP made another significant step in the vehicle safety assessment industry today with the launch of its latest protocol for the years assessment of 2026–2030. The new protocol was launched in conjunction with two ASEAN NCAP events held at the King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB), the Vehicle Safety Course 2024/007 and the ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards 2024.
The new ASEAN NCAP 2026–2030 protocol maintains the current four assessment pillars comprising Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), Safety Assist (SA) and Motorcyclist Safety (MS). Nevertheless, ASEAN NCAP has made tremendous updates in all of these assessment pillars. Several of the protocols were greatly revised and improved, with a few additional new ones to meet the current and future challenges in road safety. Some of the protocols are the application of star ratings, the assessment protocol for high-voltage electric vehicles, the assessment protocol for motorcyclist safety, and the test protocol for AEB cars to motorcyclists.
The ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards is ASEAN NCAP’s prominent event with the objective to commemorate high achievers in the field of vehicle safety in the ASEAN region. The Grand Prix Awards was first held in Kuching, Sarawak, in 2014; the second was conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2016, the third was in Karawang, Indonesia, in 2018, and the fourth was held virtually in 2021. This year, ASEAN NCAP is celebrating the achievements of the models that were assessed within the period of 2021–2023.
Two main awards were given out: the Best Safety Performance Award and the Excellence Award. ASEAN NCAP is awarding five awards under the Best Safety Performance Award, in which the winners were selected based on their highest scoring points during the 2021–2023 assessments. Under the Excellence Award, 10 categories were identified and presented not only to passenger vehicle models but also to organisations that have greatly supported ASEAN NCAP work. MIROS Director-General and also ASEAN NCAP Chairperson, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Siti Zaharah Ishak said:
“The new upcoming ASEAN NCAP protocol 2026–2030 is indeed an important milestone for road safety in the Southeast Asian countries. With the surge in the number of electric vehicles on the road today, ASEAN NCAP is releasing the Assessment Protocol on High Voltage Electric Vehicles, which will be implemented immediately. The protocol will enable ASEAN NCAP to perform assessments on electric vehicle models that have attracted high demand across the Southeast Asian region. Additionally, with the newly released protocols, I foresee they will make a significant impact in ensuring the assessed passenger cars will not only protect the occupants inside the vehicle, but also avoid collisions with other road users, particularly motorcyclists.
“On a celebratory note, as Chair of ASEAN NCAP, I am extremely proud of the success of the ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards 2024 that we held at King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok. For this year’s Grand Prix, we have 15 awards given to the most deserved passenger vehicle models assessed within 2021–2023. In addition, we would also like to acknowledge a few industry players who have provided continuous support for the work of improving vehicle safety in this region. I look forward to further cooperation with more vehicle manufacturers and automotive suppliers in the future.”
