Kajang, Malaysia, 7 December 2022 – Two of Hyundai’s latest models were recently assessed by the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP). The Hyundai Creta and Hyundai Stargazer were the first of Hyundai’s SUV and MPV models to be tested by ASEAN NCAP. They were also the first of models under the Hyundai brand that underwent the new ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 assessment protocol. All of the five previous Hyundai models assessed under the earlier protocols were either hatchback or sedan.
The Hyundai Creta and Hyundai Stargazer performed remarkably well in the new ASEAN NCAP assessment protocol. The Hyundai Creta successfully obtained 5-Star ASEAN NCAP rating with an overall score of 75.78 points whilst the Hyundai Stargazer received 4-Star rating with a total score of 66.48 points.
Hyundai Creta
According to Hyundai Creta’s accumulated score (75.78 points), the SUV achieved 34.72 points for the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category, 15.56 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP), 14.08 points for Safety Assist (SA) and 11.42 points for Motorcyclist Safety (MS) category. The Creta is fitted with 2 airbags as standard across its variants but it also offers variants with standard 6 airbags in majority of its markets in the South East Asia region. The 5-seater SUV is equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) for frontal occupants, ISOFIX installation for child seats and Pedestrian Protection technology as standard in all its variants. Other safety assist technologies available in the SUV are Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) City, AEB Inter-Urban, AEB Pedestrian, Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Auto High Beam (AHB) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) for both sides of the vehicles which are equipped either as standard or optional fitment. Most importantly, the model also offers Child Presence Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) for Motorcycle as optional fitment.
ASEAN NCAP is proud that Hyundai is offering RCCA, a technology fitment for motorcycle safety and child presence detection technology for its SUV model, Hyundai Creta. The RCCA is an additional safety technology that Hyundai highlighted in the assessment in which it is able to detect the presence of an approaching vehicle, either from the left or right, while reversing at low speed. The technology will initially provide a warning to alert the driver but it will automatically assist with braking in the event the risk of collision increases. Although both the CPD and RCCA are only offered as an optional fitment, their availability in the Creta are critically important as consumers will have the options to choose the variant fitted with both technologies.
Hyundai Stargazer
For the Hyundai Stargazer, the model achieved a total score of 66.48 points with the break down scoring comprised 31.21 points for AOP, 14.48 points for COP, 12.04 points for SA category and 8.75 points for MS. The 7-seater MPV is equipped with standard fitment of 2 airbags, ABS, SBR for both frontal occupants, ISOFIX installation for child seats in the rear compartment and Pedestrian Protection technology. The variant that is sold for the Thailand market offers ESC as a standard fitment whilst the technology together with LDW, FCW and LKA are available either as standard or optional fitment in variants sold in other available countries. In addition, the Stargazer has included AEB City, AEB Inter-Urban, AEB Pedestrian, AHB and BSD for both sides of the vehicle as optional equipment.
ASEAN NCAP wishes a warm congratulations to Hyundai for achieving impressive results for both of these models. This is another significant milestone for Hyundai to have its SUV and MPV models meet the required vehicle safety performance levels as stipulated in the ASEAN NCAP protocol. This is indeed an advantage to road users in the ASEAN countries as SUVs and MPVs models are gaining popularity due to its extra passenger seats and thus able to carry more people and additional goods than a sedan model could. Based on the result assessments of these two models show that Hyundai has placed greater emphases on both the safety of its occupants and also other vulnerable road users. The awarded ASEAN NCAP ratings to both Creta and Stargazer mark a commitment by Hyundai to offer safer passenger cars to the public. The current ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 assessment protocol covers four assessment domains with AOP covers 40.00 points of the overall score, and COP, SA and MS make up 20.00 points each of the overall score.
