Kajang, 12 April 2016 – The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) recently organized a Safety Assist Workshop in Johor Bahru, Malaysia on 31 March to 1 April 2016. The workshop was organized following the release of ASEAN NCAP Rating Road Map 2017-2020 in Bandung, Indonesia last year. Starting 2017 until 2020, ASEAN NCAP’s new rating assessment will be based on a single rating system instead of the current dual rating system.
Based on the new rating, three domains will be assessed; Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), makes up 50% of the overall score, Child Occupant Protection (COP) and Safety Assist (SA), each makes up 25% of the overall rating. The main purpose of the workshop is to discuss and fine tune the protocols for the new rating system particularly on Safety Assist. For this workshop, ASEAN NCAP received well over 50 participants from various stakeholders from Japan, Thailand, India and Malaysia.
The workshop was divided into two segments; the first segment was on technical dialogue with ASEAN NCAP presenting the protocols for the new rating system. The presented protocols consist of fitment rating system, overall rating protocol, assessment protocols comprising adult occupant protection, frontal impact testing protocol, side impact testing protocol, child occupant protection and safety assist. All of these protocols were presented by Mr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim, ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General and ASEAN NCAP Inspectors; Mr. Mohd Hafzi Md Isa and Mr. Yahaya Ahmad. The presentation slides presented on that day can be downloaded from the links below.
The second segment of the workshop is on vehicle demonstration, which was held at Padang Kawad, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia on the second day. The focus of the demonstration is on safety assist technologies that are equipped inside the vehicles. The first technology demonstrated is on Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) equipped inside Subaru WRX. The AEB functionality inside the vehicle was presented by Mr. Masafumi Matsuda from Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. The second technology demonstrated is on Blind Spot Technology (BST) equipped inside Volvo V40. The explanation on BST demonstration was presented by Mr. Mohd Hafzi.
Prior to the demonstration, ASEAN NCAP released the crash test result of Honda BR-V. BR-V received 4-Star AOP for variant without Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) for both frontal occupants and 5-Star AOP for variant equipped with ESC and SBR for frontal occupants. The award was presented by Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon, Director-General of Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research and Chairman of ASEAN NCAP and he was accompanied by Mr. Ahmed Hj. Ismail of Automobile Association of Malaysia, who is also ASEAN NCAP Steering Committee member.
The finalized ASEAN NCAP protocols will be released for the industry during the ASEAN Automobile Safety Forum 2016/004 that will be held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam at the end of this May. For the public, the protocols will be released in November 2016.
