Kajang, 7 July 2015 – The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian region (ASEAN NCAP) recently crash tested the new Mitsubishi Triton. The Mitsubishi Triton received a 4-Star result for its Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and achieved a 2-Star rating for Child Occupant Protection (COP) with only 48% compliance.
ASEAN NCAP Chairman, Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon said, “Pickup trucks are slowly gaining popularity here in ASEAN region due to its utility and durability. Apart from being favoured by adventurous enthusiasts, pickup trucks are also used by people from different walks of life, hence there is a high demand for it. The star rating from ASEAN NCAP gives them informed choices to select the best pickup trucks to use.”
ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General, Mr. Khairil Anwar bin Abu Kassim, in relation of the crash test said, “It is essential for large passenger vehicles marketed around ASEAN region, are assessed using ASEAN NCAP standard as pickup trucks are highly demanded by business owners and families. The result of this test will give a clear view on the safety rating of these types of vehicle for consumers, and manufacturers alike.” Khairil also added that Australasian NCAP (ANCAP) has also assessed Mitsubishi Triton and it received a 5-Star rating. “The same specification is available as premium variant in ASEAN countries like Cambodia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Currently, ASEAN NCAP is in the process of evaluating the result of ANCAP’s rating and compare it with the result of our tested variant.”
The gists of Mitsubishi Triton result are as follows.
>> Mitsubishi Triton achieved 4-Star for AOP with the score of 13.56 and only 2-Star for COP (48% compliance).
>> Mitsubishi Triton is the third pickup truck model crash tested by ASEAN NCAP after Isuzu D-Max (March 2014) and Chevrolet Colorado (March 2014). These vehicles were all crash tested in Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI).
>> The Triton AOP score, 13.56 (4-Star), were in between the two vehicles tested before it, with Colorado leading the AOP with a score of 14.19 (5-star) and D-Max with 11.87 (4-Star). However, Mitsubishi Triton obtained the lowest score in COP between the three with only 48% compliance (2-Star) while Colorado and D-Max scored significantly higher, 63% (3-Star) and 71% (4-Star) respectively.
>> The Mitsubishi Triton tested by ASEAN NCAP is produced in Thailand and caters for all ASEAN countries although there are variations in the safety package among the offered variants.
