ASEAN NCAP Launches New Initiative on Intelligent Vehicle Advanced Safety Assessment (IVASA)

ASEAN NCAP Launches New Initiative on Intelligent Vehicle Advanced Safety Assessment (IVASA)

KAJANG, MALAYSIA, 6 June 2026 – As vehicle technologies continue to evolve beyond conventional safety systems, intelligent driving functions are becoming an increasingly important component of modern mobility. To support the safe deployment of these technologies and provide greater transparency to consumers, ASEAN NCAP is proud to introduce the ASEAN NCAP Beyond Rating: Intelligent Vehicle Advanced Safety Assessment (IVASA) programme.

6 June 2026

What is IVASA?

IVASA is the first dedicated intelligent vehicle assessment programme in the ASEAN region. It is developed to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) and Intelligent Driving Systems available in production vehicles. The programme represents a significant milestone in ASEAN NCAP’s commitment to promoting safer and smarter mobility across the region.

Built upon the principle of balancing driving safety with user experience, IVASA focuses on the operational performance, system reliability, and risk management capabilities of intelligent driving technologies under real-world driving conditions. The assessment framework is designed primarily for vehicles equipped with SAE Level 2 (L2) driving automation features, where steering, acceleration and braking support are provided while the driver remains responsible for supervising the driving task.

The IVASA’s evaluation will assess the following items:

  • how effectively intelligent driving systems respond to traffic situations;
  • how they maintain operational stability, support driver engagement; and
  • how the systems contribute to overall road safety.

Through a structured and objective methodology, IVASA aims to provide meaningful information to consumers while encouraging continuous technological advancement among vehicle manufacturers.

IVASA Technical Protocol

ASEAN NCAP and its IVASA partners are currently in the final stage development of the programme’s protocol. Hence, ASEAN NCAP plans to officially release the IVASA Technical Protocol at the end of June 2026. The programme will initially focus on selected vehicle models equipped with Level 2 driving automation technologies. Nevertheless, participation is also open to all vehicle manufacturers interested in demonstrating their commitment to intelligent vehicle safety and innovation.

Why IVASA Matters for ASEAN

As ASEAN continues to emerge as one of the world's most dynamic automotive markets, IVASA offers Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) a valuable opportunity to showcase the maturity, robustness, and real-world performance of their intelligent driving systems equipped in their models. The programme will serve as a credible regional benchmark, enabling manufacturers to distinguish their technologies while demonstrating their readiness to address the unique driving challenges of ASEAN roads. These challenges include mixed traffic conditions, high motorcycle density, diverse infrastructure quality, and tropical weather environments.

Additionally, participation in IVASA will provide manufacturers with an independent platform to highlight advancements in intelligent mobility, strengthen consumer confidence, and reinforce their leadership in the transition towards safer and more connected transportation.

IVASA First Result Announcement

The first batch of IVASA assessment results is scheduled for release in October 2026. These results will provide valuable insights into the capabilities of intelligent driving technologies available in the ASEAN market and their contributions to the development of future intelligent vehicle safety standards.

Through IVASA, ASEAN NCAP continues to expand its role beyond conventional vehicle safety ratings, supporting the advancement of intelligent mobility and helping shape the next generation of safer vehicles for ASEAN road users.

Together, we are defining the future of intelligent vehicle safety in ASEAN.
